Message: hey all... This is my first time for the HIM distance and I am in my taper (yeah!!) but I have noticed that my legs are a little more sore and heavy and that I am more fatigued. Is this normal or should i back off some more. I am doing more 'speed work' if you call it that, but time/mileage on the disciplines has gone done. just curious as to what your thoughts are. thanks and i appreciate all that you all have helped me with in the past and present. And I will 'try not to suck'!!!

thanks
schultz

Message: I always feel like total ass during taper. But if you actually feel SORE then I would back off. You are not gaining any fitness at this point for a race this weekend. I might swim or do an EZ spin on the bike (30 min) and maybe run 1-2 miles and stretch like mad afterwards.

Good luck and have fun! Throw up your bib # so we can stalk you! I will be stalking a bunch of local peeps for the FL 70.3 as well as IMTX.

Message: I always feel "twingy" during taper with lots of aches and pains, heavy legs and I never feel like the taper is working. I usually do short "speed" workouts too and always take at least 2 days off the week of the race. Maybe this is just me, but the day before the race, I run a 3 miler hard and if I feel like crap I know I will have a good race?! Works for me. My advice, tri not to worry about the taper this week. Instead obsess about getting gear in order and think about nutrition and timing and plan your race report for us. Have a great race.

Message: trust your plan.....don't get wigged out at this point. Perfectly normal to feel a little lethargic during taper. You're not going to gain/lose fitness at this point,so don't do anything stupid. Hopefully your taper includes some brief bouts of intensity to wake your legs up. Stick with what brung ya and be ready like a prisoner on jailbreak on race day!!

Message:
You are the only one who knows how you are feeling. No coach or set plan knows. Listen to your body. If your legs are heavy and achy because they haven't had a chance to properly recover from your training then take more rest days. If you're taking rest days and they feel heavy - which can happen - this is not something to be so worried about. But the former IS an issue. If in doubt, leave it out. You get faster on the days you let your body recover.

Message: It's good to read this discussion. I am tapering, only for an Olympic, but have been sore in weird places, and the recovery run I did at a slow pace yesterday felt so crappy. I kinda felt the same way in my taper last year, but felt great for the race. Just good to know that it's not abnormal. Good luck! I bet you'll do great!

Message: During taper I always feel sore and lethargic. I think that the worse you feel, the more prepared you are. If you were feeling good right now, THEN you'd know something is wrong :) Good luck # 1063!
