Written on: Saturday April 21, 2012 Message: To those of you who have made it to the Big
Island, I need some advice. I finally made it to
Kona on spring break and we fell in love with it,
so much so that we're going back for two weeks
this summer. I've trying to avoid completely
bankrupting ourselves by working on
transportation. (Just a compact car will be $600
for the two weeks; a larger vehicle could be
almost double that.) We'll be taking bikes so
we'll need to rent a large vehicle to get them to
our condo. The other option would be to take a
taxi or other transportation to the condo and then
rent a car in town. Does anyone have some
suggestions as to how to do this to save some
bucks? Have any of you used a taxi or other
transportation service in Kona, and if so, which
one? Other recommendations? | Subject: RE: Kona transportation ideas needed By: Paul B.

This site
rocks!!
I thought about the option to
have a van or taxi transport the bike then rent a
smaller car to get around...but transport to/from
airport is not cheap.
How about renting bikes
in Kona? Several good bike shops....

Written on: Sunday April 22, 2012 Message: Doc, THANK YOU!!!!!! They set me up with a car for
$150.00 less than anything I was finding using
Entertainment book or AAA discounts. That's
amazing! It doesn't solve the bike issue since we
still need to figure out how to get them to and
from the airport, and I'm too cheap to rent a
larger vehicle while we're there. With gas at
$5.00 a gallon on the island, I want to go with a
compact car. We're thinking of shipping the bikes
over, probably to Bikeworks. Does anyone have
some advice for that idea? We haven't ruled out
renting either. I need to ride probably 4-5 times
while we're there. | Subject: RE: Kona transportation ideas needed By: Jim R.

Written on: Sunday April 22, 2012 Message: So far, it's hideously expensive, but I've just
check a couple of places. It would be cheaper to
take them on the plane with us. It might be time
to revise Clyde's thread on soft bike bags... | Subject: RE: Kona transportation ideas needed By: Paul B.

Written on: Sunday April 22, 2012 Message: Teri,
Have you priced rentals? I mean, if
you are going to race, definitely bring your bike.
Training? rent. There are several bike shops, they
rent good bikes.
If you are taking your bike,
you will have to take it apart, pay for airline
(research this in advance!), find a way to get it
to the hotel, then reverse all of that on the way
home.
If you need a soft side case, I
bought a Biknd bag off ebay for $470 shipped. Or
buy a case off Craigs List. Hard side cases are
more bulky.

luggage? You could consider folding down a bike
rack and using it on the back of your compact car.
I have a Saris bike rack that is fairly light and
fits quite a range of cars. Renting bikes might
be the easiest route, then when you return you
have the joy of being reunited with your own
bike.

Written on: Monday April 23, 2012 Message: I think I may have the problem solved. A friend
of ours has two soft cases that she's willing to
loan to us. The soft cases should be flexible
enough that we can load them into a smaller car.
Yes! I checked out renting bikes. To rent an all
carbon bike would run about $60 a day, others are
still at least $40 a day. I need to ride at least
4-5 days while we'll be there, as well as my
husband, so double the rate. You get a discount
if you rent for several days in a row but it's
still a good chunk of change. We'll spend $100
round trip for each bike if we take them on the
plane, so we're ahead of the game to just take our
own, plus they're carbon fiber bikes that are
fitted to us. If it was just one day, it might be
different. At least Doc saved me $150 on the car
rental; thank you again Doc! | Subject: RE: Kona transportation ideas needed By: Paul B.

My pleasure! 46-60/day is
ridiculous!
If you haven't done it, you
should do the Manta Ray dive or snorkel.
Also,
if the lava is flowing into the ocean (it is not
right now), you should go see that on the Hilo
side. | | Please log-in or join free to reply | |
