Written on: Monday April 16, 2012 Message: Well... I neither won nor crapped in a squating
position so this might be rather boring compared
to Ben G's report but I'll give it a go anyway.
This is the 2nd year we've hosted this race here
at UNE and I am one of the 3 people that help
coordinate it.
I fueled saturday night
with a half a pizza I ate while setting up the
transition area. I remember thinking this isn't
good, as I reached for another and another and
another - but it's pizza and oh so good!
We started with the run and I hoped for
a 6:20 pace for the 5K and nailed it the 1st two
miles, but fell off the pace for the last mile and
finished in 6:31 pace overall. I have really
worked to get into the 6:XX pace category so I was
happy.
The bike had a long "run
out" and "run in" in the time
(almost a full minute) so I was excited to see a
22mph average overall. I caught a handful of
"runners" and one of our students that
did the whole thing barefoot (which I learned as a
result is ok with the USAT). The winner slapped
down a 25mph average which is just beastly. He's
training for Lake Placid and from what I saw is
ready to roll.
The swim was a short 150
yards snake swim but it's really not that easy
after running and biking. I managed to pass a
couple of guys in the pool, which was the oppostie
of what happened to me last year. The last guy I
passed on lap 5 grabbed my foot/ankle TWICE so
much that I had to actually kick him off. After
we finished he apologized for the
"contact" as he put it, and I played it
off with a no problem. He knew and he knew I knew
so, that's all that mattered. And, frankly, I
beat him to the exit by 2-seconds. BTW, to
underscore Clyde's email about fast transitions -
I beat him by 17 seconds in the transition area,
so there was 1 place better as a result.
Post race, I get the same thoughts I
always get after suffering a sprint/Oly race which
is why do I torture myself like this, is it worth
it.... then I went home took a nap, then drank 3
ice cold beers and ate chinese food for dinner and
it helped! |

ride, and still managing to pass people in the
swim - sounds like a fun way to start the
season!

I love
sprints. They get me very excited about the
season. Sounds like fun! Great job on hitting
your pace on the run. |

on this site who can explain this phenomenon...is
it accidental or strategic? |

Nice work! Sounds like you placed well but
you didn't mention that...? I wonder how much
better you would have done with a couple less
pizza slices!? And as you found out later, we do
this sport to be able to have beers and Chinese
food guilt-free! Congrats! |

I'm sorry to inform
you Clyde but pizza makes you faster. Trust me. |

Written on: Tuesday April 17, 2012 Message: Sounds like a great race, Didds. What ever
happened to the other half of the pizza? you left
us hanging...
Suzanne included crapping in her
race report, as did Ben, please, we want the
details!
Seriously, though, nice pace on
the run and bike! |

Written on: Tuesday April 17, 2012 Message: Great fun Scott. I like the reverse race idea!!!
I'm with Suzanne on the pizza - perfectly balanced
race food - pre and post, although the beer is
essential, it adds the carbs so necessary to
adequate recovery. |

Written on: Wednesday April 18, 2012 Message: The bike was 11 miles. I got close to 23mph not
including the run in and out. I'd like to hit
that or, of course better, for a sprint race this
year. I think I can do it.... I just need to
suffer a little more!
I was 8th overall
out of 160.
Thanks for the kinds words
all race season is finally here!!! |

Written on: Friday April 20, 2012 Message: Great going Scott. Great that you helped get that
race together too.
Maybe the ankle graber was
just trying to teach you. Being the faster swimmer
could you just grab his ankle to pull yourself
over him quickly. No one likes to be overtaken
slowly. On second thought maybe just swimming over
him with a push off his head or shoulders. would
be quicker. But seriously great race. Have a great
season. |

Written on: Monday April 23, 2012 Message: Ankle grabbers amaze me as well. I encountered a
lot of this in IM Wisconsin swim. My theory(no
evidence - feel free to reject it) is that people
who come in contact with feet using their hands
instinctively grab much like they would as
swimming in a pool and coming to the wall and the
hand touches it - they grab the wall for a feeling
of security. It's almost like when you suddenly
fall and your first instinct is to spread your
arms to reach for something to stabilize yourself
before you get hurt. So grabbing the ankles in the
swim may offer some sense of security when a
swimmer is struggling a little. Maybe they are
just jerks and trying to pull you back to swim
over the top of you - I don't know :) |
