Discussion: HR Monitor display delays?

Subject: HR Monitor display delays?

Message: Hey Ontriers,
I recently did an interval workout based on HR zones with some :30 recoveries. It is the first time I have done short recoveries where I was trying to stay within a specific HR range. I was frustrated to learn my Garmin 305 has between a :15-25 delay between the actual rate and when it is displayed.

Is this standard? Do Suuntos and Polar monitors have a similar delay? Is this the age of my 305 (about 3-4 years old)?

Thanks

Message: I have both Polar and Garmin HR monitors and the Polar seems to update much more quickly than the Garmin. Unfortunately, it it not GPS so I only use it on days when I am specifically doing HR zone training. Like any good type A triathlete, I prefer focusing on results (speed) than something as scientific as heart rate. So needless to say, every time I use the Polar, I need to wipe off the dust first.

I'm not Type A but I almost can't run without my GPS now. No surprise the Polar would be snappier with its readouts. I think Suunto and Garmin use the same HR technology (at least for training effect).

It is super annoying to do intervals w/o real-time HR data. Oh well.
