Message: Has anyone completed the Ben Greenfield IM training plan that is on Ontri? If so, have you done any other training plans, and can you compare them?

Message: I'm not the perfect guy to ask because I didn't follow the plan perfectly. I used the Ontri intermediate IM plan for several months, but eventually changed to the Greenfield plan for a couple months. I liked the Greenfield detail and how it does a better job of describing the goal from each workout - breaking out intensity levels etc and it also required more hours of training. If I do another full, I think I'd use it again, but I'd start using it earlier and try to follow it more precisely.

Message: What's the deal with the 2 hour swims? The swim is the least important part of a IM. You can complete the swim on running and biking conditioning alone. I thought I read in some of his blogs that he recommends swimming for just 30 minutes a few times a week so why the 2 hour swims?

Message: I believe this plan is pretty old and maybe he has changed his mind about the long swims because he does recommend the shorter/harder ones now.

I do know that some coaches recommend the long swims for recovery workouts. I personally think they are a huge waste of time (my 2c).

Message: Why is this thread resurfacing? from 2012?

2h swim is ridiculous
1h 3x/week works pretty well, you can increase one of those to longer as you get closer to Ironman

Message: My long swim was 3 hours but not because my plan called for it but because I always wanted to hit 10k limit.

For my athletes the longest I will have them do is 10 x 400 or 8 x 500 for IM plans but prefer to keep them doing shorter swims for speed and power. Again it is all different for each athlete as all my plans are customized based on budget and strengths and weaknesses
