Message: Took me a bit longer this year to post than last year. Got to the island on Monday, wanted some R & R before race day. Stayed at Hotel Barracuda for the first night, loved it! right on the water, had a balcony with a view and could swim there. The rest of my teamates were arriving on Tuesday and we rented a 5 bed house a short walk from town and the finish line. Bikes were supposed to arrive Wednesday but when we went to pick them up they were not there! oh crap I knew it, went with Trisport Express because at the time they were the only ones shipping to the island. After much angst the bikes finally arrived Saturday at 10AM! that is cutting it close and on top of that they cracked my Zipp wheel, not a good way to start the race! Got a coach this year to try and improve my race and nutrition. Race day Started early 3:30 am to eat pre race breakfast of applesauce, protein shake, coconut water. Headed out the door with 3 other teamates at 5 am to walk a block to the bus to the race start. Very calm again this year and confident going in which was huge for me, I listened to my coach and trusted him, glad I did. Ate a powerbar 1 hour before the start and 1 gel and water 15 mins before the start. Jumped into the water and got near the front, the gun went off and it was every man/women for himself! I got swam over, hit and kicked but I would not give up my space and was able to draft quite a bit! swim 1:22, 11 mins better than last year! I was all set, so happy. ran to transition, wanted a better T1 time than last year, went into the tent and there were 3 guys holding the center pole up, they did not know where to look, all these female athletes getting naked right in front of them! put my stuff on then pulled my left armcooler sleeve up, slipped and punched myself in the jaw! I saw stars, nearly knocked myself out! LOL ran out and got my bike and headed out-stayed relaxed on the bike and stuck to my nutrition plan-powerbar perform, powerbars and gels and 1 small can of pringles in my special needs bag-so good after all that sweet stuff. bike was about 6:30, almost an hour faster than last year, YES! now the hard part. I tore my lateral meniscus the middle of Oct. and have not been able to run, so we upped my bike and I got into the water for aquajogging. I mentally was ready to walk the marathon if need be and that was the plan with my coach but I really did not want to so I got a cortisone shot the week before I left and a pain blocker by Dr. Garcia in Cozumel 3 days before the race, wore a big brace. Took it easy the first loop(saw my coach doing his last loop, knew I would get crap later from him for running but he knows how stubborn I am)since I did not know how it was going to hold up but the knee felt fine so I stuck to a jog/walked every other aid station. Nutrition on the run was not the best, sick of gels by now so only taking sips of coke and water. Run time was 5:21, 2 mins faster than last year. What a feeling crossing the finish line, my son was actually there this year and saw me finish! the fans and volunteers were awsome and really make this a great race. Finished in 13:33:18 this year I took over an hour off last years time and I turned 50! so happy-not sure if I am doing the race in 2012 since I already signed up for Mont Tremblant but we shall see.

Message: What a great race you had. More than an hour off and you ran injured. Impressive!!! Sounds like your nutrition worked, an alternative or an addition to gels are the stinger waffles. they go down ez and taste darn good! Congrats again.
