Discussion: Good late night snack ideas??

Subject: Good late night snack ideas??

Message: Every once in awhile I find myself in need of a little snack (1-3 hours post dinner)...let's say around 8pm ish...

Would love to hear some ideas, or what you all eat during those situations.

My go to has been a small apple and a little peanut butter.

Any good ideas would be greatly appreciated by my stomach (and scale)!!

Message: What you "should" eat and what I eat are very different :)

Apple with PB is good!

Other ideas:
A small bowl of ice cream
Trail mix or granola
Cheese stick with a few crackers
Small bowl of pudding or yogurt

Mostly just watch serving sizes and ingredients. Look for whole grains and natural ingredients as much as possible. Also, you can't go wrong with fresh fruits and veggies.

Message: Some air-popped popcorn- light on the butter and salt. Or try with a little hot sauce instead.

I like the apple and PB, but I substitute Sunflower Butter, and sometimes I dip it in some sunflower seeds. Reminds me of a taffy apple.

Message: I eat a bag of popcorn almost every single night. Not the loaded butter kind, but just the homestyle kind with salt. I have been eating a bag for years. Nom, Nom, Nom....

Message:
Like Erin, I hit the popcorn almost daily: some kernels and a bit of olive oil and salt.

Anything in peanut butter is good, of course.

Message: I also love popcorn. I pop my popcorn in a paper bag in the microwave and then add a little butter and salt. Not totally healthy but if I don't have something I will eat crap.

Message: For me it ranges from a bowl of ice cream to Muscle Milk to PB & crackers to an apple. All (except MM) washed down with a tall glass of skim milk.

Like Suzanne said I think it is about portion control.

Message: I probably should just "lurk" on this post because I have nothing of value to add, but as honest as I can be, my 8pm ish snack includes a couple of glasses of red wine and some tortilla chips. somedays portion control is lost.
eat "good" throughout the day, train hard and relax at snack time = go to bed happy

Message: Right at the height of peak so I'm eating everything in sight currently; but usually a lowfat yogurt w some grape nuts or fiber one sprinkled in; a clif bar or a supreme protein bar mmm mmm tastes just like a snickers bar. The skinny cow ice cream sandwiches are awesome when I gotta have ice cream; 140 cals. Suzanne and Erin have been after me to cut some weight LOL

Message: My wife made something amazing lastnight... Tapper week is adding additional snacks!

She took raw almonds and put them on a skillet... A little extra virgin olive oil and sprinkled some sea salt over them (just a little).

They were soooo good, and filled me up like I ate rice.

Message: Muscle Milk is delicious. I love the chocolate malt flavor, but you have to use milk instead of water for it to taste really good. Cookies and cream, and the strawberry and banana are really good too.

Message: I eat a bowl of cereal a few nights a week, usually CO-Co Krispies. Get my chocolate fix without a lot of calories. I usually do this if I have a long bike the next morning since I dont eat anything before hand. I also like deli turkey wrapped in leaf lettuce with a little spicy mustard and a cheese stick

Message: I no longer get the urge- something to do with age and decrepitude, but in my day I would eat anything at 1:00 am, from a big chunk of parmesan with a can of anchovies washed down with stale red wine, to a couple of pints of ben and jerry's followed by a beer. (The first sip after cherry garcia is awful, but you learn to handle it.)
Jim K's idea of an indulgent snack sounds like something that would be a treat for a flagellant monk. John is one of the few people who can drink a couple of glasses of wine and stop at a "few" tortilla chips. Before I had a wife to complain about the money I don't think I ever had a partially full bag of tortilla chips on the shelf, and I always bought the giant economy size. Muscle Milk? Butterless popcorn? I have never let these pass my lips, any more than light beer.
This reminds me that 25 years ago I lived below a guy who had a side business baking gourmet cookies. He bought bags of very expensive prepared dough. His fridge broke and he asked me to store six massive blocks of dough for him. "Go ahead and eat all you like," were his actual words, "there's plenty." There was raw oatmeal, chocolate chip, peanut butter, chocolate, and I don't know what all. It took almost my entire fridge when we put it in. The shock on his face five days later could not have been greater had I eaten his newborn child. For weeks afterward I was in withdrawal- ccookies of that kind, even then, cost a buck apiece- and I was far too sensible to buy more than a dozen at a time. Ah, youth.

Message: MM is good , but everybody should try slim fast again
To me the chocolate is just about the same as MM and a whole lot cheaper , something like 50 cents a can. and I think there is a low fat high protein variety also.
But if I'm training hard I eat a very large bowl of chocolate moose tracks ice cream. Not low fat , not sugar free. Some times I deserve it!!

Message: Carbs can initiate insulin release and shut down growth hormone production and recovery during sleep.

One of my favorite snacks is organic chocolate protein powder (flavored with stevia, not water), mixed with water and almond butter. This way, it is primarily protein/fat.
