Discussion: wetsuit tear

Message: I have a small tear in a wetsuit I was going to use in an upcoming olympic tri. I have found some good info on how to repair it, but I may not be able to get my hands on neoprene glue prior to the race. It is a small tear, really more of a puncture. Would it be okay to wear in the race or do I risk it tearing even further? If anyone has any experience with this, I would be very appreciative.

Message: Where is the tear? If there is a high risk of making it worse (i.e. in the shoulder area), then get it fixed asap. However, I tried to fix one in the shoulder area using neoprene glue and basically, all I can say is "Leave it to the professionals". It cost me $150 for both shoulders (a stripper put their fingers through them at a race. Honest). The suit is ~$450. You have to consider if it's wirth getting a new suit. If the tear is at a cuff etc, consider trimming the suit. I can be done at home, but it's not as simple as all the web-sites make it sound :)

Message: I know this may not be the best option now, but I had similar issues and sent my Westuit to Express Wetsuit Company. They did a great job for minimal cost. You just have to pay for shipping both ways.

Message: Is the tear all the way thru? Where is it located?

I have a few tears on the face but they are supported by the backing (the part that touches the body) and thus do not go all the way thru. I have a 2XU Velocity so perhaps others are not built in the same way.

Message: Maybe I should leave it to the pros to repair. The tear is on the front of the thigh and is all the way thru but small like a puncture. Does that make a difference? I am a bit worried that it could tear more when I put it on.

Message: Hmmm, tough call. If it were me, I'd try to use it as is or try to fix it myself and with my luck it would rip wide open 15 minutes before the beginning of the race as I put it on!!! Then I'd have to duck tape it up and look like a dufus.

Maybe let the pros at it.
