Subject: Burned out or out of shape By: Susan S.

Written on: Thursday November 05, 2009 Message: I did two HIM this year, one in May and one at the
end of Sept. I was ready for a much needed break,
and pretty much didn't do much in Oct. So
recently I have tried to just do a little here and
there, and I feel like I've never workout before.
Running just 3 miles felt like 13. Am I really
this out of shape that fast, or am I just burned
out of working out? |

Written on: Thursday November 05, 2009 Message: In my experience, the fitness comes back quickly,
but I am more sore and have a harder time
completing distances that were easy prior to the
layoff upon my return to exercise. In a few
weeks, you should regain most of the fitness you
lost. |

Written on: Thursday November 05, 2009 Message: The peak fitness level drops quickly, but rebuilds
fairly quickly, depending on your intensity.
If you don't have another event to focus
on, then you might use this time to play around
with different sports, try something new (call it
cross-training) while you get your mojo back. |

Written on: Thursday November 05, 2009 Message: The feeling is normal; very few stay
"psyched" all year round. This is a
great time to follow Lyn's advice and to hit the
weights. I'm trying yoga and weight lifting
myself. |

Mind and body might need
something else to do for a bit. You don't lose
that much fitness that fast, your brain might just
need some other thing to focus on.
Take all
that awesome fitness that you have developed and
do something fun with it!
I met a great
bunch of people from this NC club in Aspen about
25 years ago. Looks like the club is still having
fun skiing and other active sports and
partys.

Written on: Friday November 06, 2009 Message: Isn't it amazing how the body and mind can play
tricks on you. I feel the exact same way. I'm not
at your level but after my first Sprint in August
I felt like I was on top of the world. Over a
couple of months I started slowing down on
workouts (and eating poorly) until I'm feeling
like crap so I decided to sign up for an Olympic
in April. I'll need every bit of the 5+ months to
prepare but I just got back from the gym and I
feel totally out of shape & lethargic. Its not
very motivating to feel this way, but its good to
know that whatever fitness level I had will soon
return.
Keep fighting the fight! |

Might not be either. You just may be a bit
out of "training sorts". That is, take
a good basketball player, don't let him touch the
ball for a month, and then put him in a game one
day. What happens? He doesn't dribble or shoot
particularly well...in most cases. Has he lost
it? No, he's just a little rusty. You may just
be a little rusty.
I'd worry about mental
fatigue if you just don't enjoy it. So long as
you do enjoy, the mind may well be just fine. |

Written on: Friday November 06, 2009 Message: I totally go in the crapper once a month every
year. This year I'm actually going to be smart and
try and make it a month during the OFFSEASON,
which I've pretty much ignored the last few years,
only to have the wheels come off in the Spring.
Your mind needs a break as much as your body. I'm
gonna do nothing but eat christmas cookies and
become a big ol' fatty in December.....they jump
in fully recharged for '10!!!!! |

Written on: Saturday November 07, 2009 Message: I'm with Jim. I did IM LP in July and basically I
am just now feeling mentally and physically
capable of doing workouts like I want to even
though I feel slower than I did during Ironman
training. I keep reminding myself that I am not
in that shape anymore (I peaked at the perfect
time) and it will come back, I just need to be
patient. I did take most of August and went
really light in September to help myself but then
I felt lazy and fat. I am happy to be lifting now
to add variety. It will get better just give it
time. |

Written on: Sunday November 08, 2009 Message: periodization of training is a very personal thing
based on genetics too, personally, and being very
conservative with my training and injury
prevention I never really "take off"
because i do not feel good afterwards as well,
instead during "off season" i alternate
easy/hard weeks based on the way i feel and
keeping records of my training, will pop in a day
off now and then. Active recovery is at times more
beneficial then total rest, periodization is the
key as well as consistency. |
